Poinciana Boulevard road construction expected to last several years.
October 12, 2023
The already over-congested Poinciana Boulevard is about to get even slower. As you may have already noticed, the traffic cones have made their way to the southbound shoulder. The large electronic message boards have been set up. The time has come, finally, for the Poinciana Boulevard widening project. This will take our tiny two lane road and expand it to four lanes. Not just four lanes though, plans include accomodations for pedestrians, bike lanes, new traffic signals, and lighting. The boulevard will be equipped with Intelligent Transportation System (ITS). This will not only give you up-to-the-minute traffic conditions on your phone, but could also be used for automatic plate recognition, speed cameras, automatic incident detection, and stopped vehicle detection.
The project is approximately 5.7 miles from Trafalgar Boulevavard to Pleasent Hill Road. And thats the good news, now here is the bad news. Construction is set to continue until summer of 2026. That's right, you read correctly, almost 3 years. The all day everyday traffic is about to get worse.
Construction work may require lane closures and traffic shifts as work progresses. Lane closures are only planned for nighttime work between 7pm and 6am. Only time will tell how the work will effect already high commute times. Even though this should help those coming into town, many believe the getting around Ptown is just as bad, if not worse. As many of you know, it can take 30-45 minutes just to get to the other side of Poinciana. Until something can be done about the Wawa light and Marigold intersection on main street, traffic stands. This too may get interesting in the very near future, with the Southport Connector.
Which would throw a 70 mph expressway right in the center of Poinciana, splitting it into a north and south, with a wall in-between.
